We have all heard about them, but what exactly are VOCs?

VOC stands for volatile organic compounds, which are chemicals that contain carbon and have a high vapor pressure at room temperature. This means that they easily evaporate into the air and can be inhaled. Paint has come a long way over the years. There are many interior paint products available now that have low to no VOCs.

There are several reasons why one might choose low or no VOC (volatile organic compound) paint:

#1: Health benefits of No VOC Paint

Traditional paint products can emit high levels of VOCs which can cause irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat, and can even lead to more serious health problems such as headaches, nausea, and dizziness. Long-term exposure to VOCs has been linked to more serious health issues such as cancer, liver and kidney damage, and damage to the central nervous system. Young children, pregnant mothers, those with respiratory issues, allergies, asthma or sensitivities to strong odors may be among those who are especially bothered by higher VOCs. Sherwin William's ProMar 200 Zero VOC Interior Latex is a great solution if you are looking for a no VOC paint.

#2: Improved indoor air quality

We all want to breathe cleaner air, right? By using low or no VOC paint, you can help improve the air quality in your home or office, which can lead to a healthier and more comfortable indoor environment. Check out this paint from Sherwin Williams that not only helps prevent the growth of mold and mildew, but also has air purifying technology. Paint smells can linger in a home for weeks after it is painted, but because low to no VOC paints emit fewer harmful chemicals and have very little to no odor, they drastically improve the indoor air quality. There is no need to have to air out your home for an extended period of time before being able to fully use your interior space again!

#4: Long-lasting durability

No VOC paint has comparable durability to traditional paint, and in some cases, may even outperform traditional paint in terms of resistance to fading, cracking, and chipping.
